BSA Spitfire Wins 2018 Poole Dream Machines Bike of the Year
26th September 2018
The 2018 season of Poole Dream Machines ended on a high with hundreds of bikes enjoying an epic season finale on Tuesday 25 September.
Organised by Bournemouth and Poole Tourism, Dream Machines is part of Wave 105 Summertime in the South, Poole’s summer events programme. The final event of the Dream Machines 2018 season was marked by the eagerly awaited return of the Bike of the year contest sponsored by Dutton Gregory. Open to winners of the weekly “Bike of the Night” heats during 2018, the finale saw 19 bikes welcomed back to compete.
During the evening, voting cards were handed out to fellow bikers and spectators who cast their votes for their favourite bike in the line up. Each owner provided information for their competing bike giving its history.
1st place – The winner was Richard Stephens with his genuine 1960 650cc BSA Spitfire Scrambler. Chosen by the public, Richard won £300, The Midge Holloway Trophy and a Valet Kit courtesy of Muc-Off.
Richard, said: “The bike is one of only about 1500 that were exclusively for the American market between 1957 and ’62. Although road legal, they were mainly used for long distance desert racing. The bike has been completely restored over the last two years. There was stiff competition and some stunning bikes on show so it was a complete surprise to win. Thank you to all the Marshals and everyone involved in this fantastic event.”
2nd place – was John Flynn with his AJS won £200.
3rd place – Paul Prout with his Hayabusa won £100.
Cate Battson, Senior Marketing Executive, Dutton Gregory, said: “2018 has been a fantastic summer and Bike of the Year is a brilliant way to end the Dream Machine season. It was great to see so many regulars, spectators and enthusiasts joining in to choose the winner from such a wonderful line up. Our thanks go to those who come down week after week to help support the event, we look forward to seeing you in 2019.”
