On the outskirts of Poole and Bournemouth sits the quaint historic market town of Wimborne Minster. The town is rich with history, dating back to the beginning of the 8th century, when the sisters of the King of the West Saxons endowed a monastery here. Since then, Wimborne has been known for being a market town, having fantastic eateries, and its rightful ‘In Bloom’ success.
Wimborne Market has been a hotspot for people to sell their fresh produce, interact with locals, and share their products for decades. And with it being the largest undercover market in the South, it would be a shame not to take a look around. The town is avid about sustainability and hosts several second-hand shops, a repair café, and a refill store. Along with some well-known fashion brands, Wimborne hosts some lovely independent boutiques that enable you to shop around.
Wimborne offers a great variety, from well-known chain restaurants and pubs to independent local bars and cafes. So whatever you fancy, whether that be a cheese and wine tasting session in Renoufs, a light bite from one of the many beloved cafes, or a three-course meal at a cosy pub, there is something for everybody.
With Wimborne being only a small town, it certainly does not compromise on activities to do! Look at the town from a bird's-eye view when visiting Wimborne Model Town and Gardens. This vintage attraction first opened its doors in the ‘50s and, since then, has been one of the most popular attractions in Wimborne.
The charming Minster Church of St. Cuthburga has a history that dates back over 1300 years and is a magnificent find if you are a cultural history buff. This, along with other museums and National Trust properties that you can explore, will give you knowledge and understanding of this delightful town.
Wimborne offers some stunning local walks to stretch your legs and soak in those countryside views. The unique Beech Avenue (pictured above), which is not only a unique walking experience but also a pleasant car journey as you head into Wimborne, exists thanks to the late owners of Kingston Lacy House, the Banks family, who planted 365 trees on one side of the road to represent the number of days in the year and 366 trees on the other side for a leap year. You can also enjoy walks around Badbury Rings and the now-National Trust-owned Kingston Lacy house and parkland, all located within a stone's throw from Wimborne.
