About

Poole Business improvement District (BID) have confirmed their support of 'Poole Goes Vintage' on Poole Quay and in Falklands Square on Sunday 21st July 2024 alongside their delivery partner Stir! Events.

Poole Goes Vintage is a delightful step back in time and with Poole's rich history and charming streets, it is the perfect setting for an occasion where visitors can don their best vintage attire, to the sleek sophistication of the '50s with women's cinched waists, hyperfeminine elegance, and a whole load of gingham prints alongside fit-and-flare, oversize sunnies, big straw hats, and silk hair wraps, it's safe to say the influence of this particular era casts a fabulously long shadow.

For the men, we've also got James Dean and Marlon Brando to thank for jeans crossing over into the mainstream in the '50s. Formerly part of the uniform for manual work, the rise of teenage culture and rock 'n' roll brought denim into the fashion fold. And thank goodness for that!

Extending through to the late 60's where the exact opposite happened with bright, swirling colours. Psychedelic, and tie-dye shirts and long hair and beards were commonplace. The fashion style was in effect like rebellious hippies and unconventional mods. Short skirts paired with long coats and long skirts paired with short vests.

Moving into 'modern vintage era' of the 70s, 'Abba' style. Polyester was the material of choice and bright colours were everywhere. Men and women alike were wearing tight-fitting trousers and platform shoes.

The event though isn't just about fashion - Artisan Vendors, 'Punch & Judy', Face Painting, Retro Hairdressing and Competitions along with showcasing Vintage Cars and Classic Motorcycles and a Fairground Ride will also be available to those who wish to participate.

Stir! Events Managing Director Mandy Polkey commented: "Without the support of Poole BID this iconic event would not be able to happen this year. On behalf of the vintage world we want to say a big thank you to Jacqui, Wendy and the BID Board for agreeing to fund, support and be the main sponsor for this event this year and for a few years to come. Lots of exciting things happening this year – a new 1970's music area in Falkland Square and the Jive Aces headlining on the Quay! A new website is about to be launched so keep your eyes peeled for www.poolegoesvintage.com for up-to-date event information.

Headline sponsor and Poole BID Lead - Jacqui Rock added ". It goes without saying that the vintage era is one that has a vast following and so attracts huge crowds who like to reminisce and even take part in activity relating to these classic eras, which is why we have been looking to bring Poole Goes Vintage (PGV) back into the town for a while".

"We are therefore delighted that successful planning has resulted in us being able to finally bring PGV back here. The idea being that over time we can create 'pockets of retro era's' right across the town as part of the progression for this event".

So, why not take a stroll through the town, enjoying live music from each of the eras, classic cars, and indulging in some retro treats from food stalls and crafts reminiscent of bygone days. It is a fantastic way to celebrate nostalgia and the timeless elegance of vintage fashion and culture in the heart of Poole town.
