Jazz by the Sea Festival line up 11-17 June 2017
Jazz by the Sea Festival returns with a fresh new look this year with events taking place at various venues across Bournemouth and Poole from Sunday 11th to Saturday 17th June.
A number of well known jazz professionals will be performing with local musicians during the festival week, playing in a series of concerts and live events across the region. There will be live performances in retail outlets, shopping arcades, hotels, bars, restaurants, clubs and pubs as well as in public areas with our jazz musicians playing from the Jazz by the Sea Festival’s unique Jazzmobile.
The festival opens on Sun 11th at The Jazz Cafe with Andy Urquhart and Alan Barnes and an afternoon JazzCruise on board the vintage motor yacht, The Dorset Queen from Poole Quay featuring Chris Walker’s Hot 5 playing good old fashioned trad jazz. Meanwhile at The Miramar Hotel, a tasty session of Gin & Jazz with the Sarah Bolter Trio and in the evening, The Cliff House Hotel in Southbourne hosts the festival’s opening Dinner Jazz event with Rachel More and Veronique Joly. Also on the same evening, the Lighthouse Poole’s Centre for the Arts is the venue for a family concert featuring BBC’s Clare Teal and her Hollywood Orchestra led by trumpeter and band leader Guy Barker. As the UK’s best loved Queen of Swing, Clare Teal introduces a programme of popular jazz music from the Great English and American Songbooks.
Through the festival week there are live jazz events at multiple venues across Poole and Bournemouth. On Wed 14th for example, well known British jazz/soul/funk band, Incognito are playing at Canvas and on Thurs 15th a special BCTC Dinner event with the Bournemouth University Band at The Citygate Centre.
Also on Thurs 15th , an evening of Blues and Boogie presented by Jazz FM at the Lighthouse features music from New Orleans, with acoustic blues guitarist Mark Harrison and boogie woogie pianist Dino Baptiste together with Zoe Schwarz and her Blue Commotion Band, hosted by Jazz FM’s David Freeman. And on Fri 16th the well known James Taylor Quartet headlines an evening of jazz music at Mr Kyps.
To round off a week of Jazz, the World Jazz Jamboree on Sat 17th at the Lighthouse showcases jazz music from around the world. Opening the series of concerts is Italian saxophonist, Tommaso Starace who explores the melodic and cinematic approach to jazz music against a backdrop of images from one of Italy’s best fashion photographers, followed by Monica Vasconcelos who introduces the wonderful lyrical compositions of the Bossa Nova with her authentic Brazilian band. Dan Somogyi returns mid afternoon with his Thokozile Collective - a highly talented South African jazz sextet featuring the reverberating rhythms and beats of Africa, then in the evening, acclaimed Violinist Omar Puente and his Sextet play their unique style of music drawing on the elements of classical and Cuban music to form the basis of an exciting new approach to Jazz. Finally, Soothsayers, a hugely popular Afro Caribbean 7 piece band perform original Afrobeat and reggae-influenced jazz grooves to bring the Jazz by the Sea Festival to a close.
